Lead2030 Challenge for SDG15 - Supported by the Audi Environmental Foundation

How can technology protect and restore our eco-systems?

Human life depends on the earth for our sustenance and livelihoods. Forests cover 30 percent of the Earth’s surface, provide vital habitats for millions of species, and important sources for clean air and water, as well as being crucial for combating climate change.

The United Nations General Assembly declared the period 2011-2020 as United Nations Decade on Biodiversity to promote the implementation of a strategic plan on biodiversity and its overall vision of living in harmony with nature. Whilst there are some encouraging global trends in protecting terrestrial ecosystems, this progress is too slow and the 2020 targets of SDG15 are unlikely to be met.

The Audi Environmental Foundation is proud to offer this Lead2030 challenge to support these efforts. Be it rivers or forests, mountains or wetlands, urgent action must be taken to reduce the loss of natural habitats and biodiversity which are part of our common heritage and support global food and water security, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and peace and security.

Since 2009, the Audi Environmental Foundation has supported innovative projects that advance the cause of biodiversity. Through our ‘greenovation’ approach, we seek out and accelerate projects that combine cutting edge technology with traditional environmental protection principles in order to protect and restore the environment for future generations. Over the last decade we have funded drone technology for the protection of meadows, big data analysis of bee behaviour, and helped trees talk through sensor technology that intelligently measures forest eco-systems. Learn more here.

As the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity draws to an end and the Decade of Action for the Sustainable Development Goals begins, the Audi Environmental Foundation is turning to a new generation of eco innovators for their solutions.

Our Lead2030 Challenge or SDG15 seeks to support not-for-profit organisations which leverage new or emerging technology to protect or restore terrestrial ecosystems. Solutions can be focussed on one or more terrestrial biosphere such as rivers, forests, tundra or mountains. We are not looking initiatives with a primary focus on industrial agriculture or animal protection.
